Held Monte Carlo Course for Radiotherapy, 30 - 31 October 2006, Laboratori Nazionali del Sud - INFN, Catania, Italy

The continuous grow of radiation treatment complexity produced, in the last years, many new treatment modalities like the Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatment (IMRT) or therapy with proton and ion beams. This leads to the need of more accurate calculation methods able to predict with more precision the delivered dose to patients. The Monte Carlo method probably represents, on the other hand, the more accurate approach to the dose calculation in a complex treatment.

The course “Il metodo Monte Carlo in Radioterapia”, organized by Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN) in Catania (I) will provide a ‘picture’ as complete as possible of the main Monte Carlo codes that can used in the radiotherapy field. The experience of many groups around the world will be presented. Particular care will be devoted to the results obtained in the framework of the MAESTRO project funded by EC in 6FP. INFN, ISS, Dosisoft, UBC and REM partners will be report their experience and the results so far obtained in MAESTRO as dissemination program. Moreover the problem of the calculation time will be discussed, it representing one of the bigger limitation of Monte Carlo approach. Solutions will be discussed presenting, in particular, results obtained in a distributed GRID environment.

The course is recognized by Italian Healthy Minister and it provides valid credits for the Italian Educational course in Medicine (ECM).
